Our Local Curriculum
To develop our local curriculum at Stratford Community Childcare, we have embraced the rich history and culture of Stratford, known as the heart of Taranaki and also as Whakaahurangi, named by the chieftainess Rua-pū-tahanga of Ngati Ruanui. Stratford’s connection to the Patea River and its namesake, Stratford-upon-Avon in England, is symbolised by the presence of New Zealand's only Glockenspiel. The Patea River, flowing from Mount Taranaki, which is home to the North Island brown Kiwi, further deepens our connection to the land. Our local curriculum is intertwined with the community, as reflected in our regular excursions, community wall, and engagement with local landmarks, ensuring that tamariki (children) and their whānau (families) are continuously connected to the heritage and environment of Stratford.
Whānaungatanga
Whānaungatanga is the essence of building and maintaining strong, meaningful relationships within our community. It reflects the importance of kinship, connection, and a sense of belonging. At Stratford Community Childcare Centre, we place a high value on whānaungatanga, fostering an environment where children, their families, and our staff create deep, authentic bonds. Through open communication, mutual respect, and shared experiences, we nurture a supportive community where everyone feels valued and connected. Whānaungatanga is at the heart of everything we do, ensuring that our centre is a place where relationships thrive and where everyone has a place to stand.
Our Learning Priorities
Manaakitanga
Manaakitanga is the principle of showing kindness, respect, and care for others. At Stratford Community Childcare Centre, we embody manaakitanga by creating a warm, welcoming environment where every individual is valued and treated with dignity. We believe that fostering a culture of kindness and respect helps children develop empathy, build positive relationships, and feel secure in their identity. By embracing manaakitanga, we ensure that our centre is a place where everyone feels supported, appreciated, and empowered to contribute to our vibrant community.
Equitable Learning Opportunities
At Stratford Community Childcare Centre, we are committed to providing equitable learning opportunities for all children. We believe that every child deserves the chance to succeed, regardless of their background, abilities, or circumstances. Our approach is tailored to meet the unique needs of each child, ensuring that everyone has access to the resources, support, and encouragement they need to thrive. By fostering an inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated, we empower every child to reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to our community.
